Springtime in Rockies: Ski Arapahoe Basin -- in your bikini. Viva Colorado!

Spring skiing at Arapahoe Basin is one of the treats the high country of Colorado provides.  You can ski in
morning and have a round of golf in the afternoon. In the photo two skiers kick off the upper cornice at A Basin.

Spring looks a bit different in Colorado than it does in many parts of the country. One day we'll have sunshine and 80 degrees and the next we'll get fresh snow in the mountains.  While skiing in May isn't for everyone and the snow isn't the champagne powder the Colorado Rockies are famous for, a day on the slopes of Arapahoe Basin is something that everyone should experience at least once.  It is a bucket list kind of day to carve a few turns wearing shorts or apres skiing on the sundeck in your bikini.

Skiing is just part of the attraction to a spring day on the mountain.  Working on your tan while enjoying a BBQ at 11,000 feet is another. It can also be a thrill just to get up high on a glorious spring day in the mountains for a hike, a bike or a picnic.

"Iris" Aspen, Colorado USA

An old favorite, this photo is 35 years old and one of the first times I shot color film with much intention. I remember that it was spring in the Roaring Fork Valley and I had just moved down valley from Aspen. I was testing out new equipment I had purchased. I set up this photo late in the afternoon to take advantage of the low angle, warm light. I was very deliberate in how I controlled the depth of field and set up this composition.

While I have not made a career out of photographing flowers I seem to often photograph flowers as a part of my travel assignments. Even after all these years this remains one of my favorites.

"Red Balloon White Star" Snowmass, Colorado

A timeless classic.

A graphic image of a hot air balloon as it drifts straight overhead at the Snowmass, Colorado balloon festival. An often published image that has great visual impact.

This photo was created in 1979 and first published as a two-page spread in GuestLife Magazine. I was just beginning my commercial career in Aspen. The two-page spread was coupe for me at the time. It had a nice paycheck attached to it but the gutter fold of the magazine destroyed the dynamic nature of the image. It was a natural choice for my one man show in Denver given its boldness and color. It was wonderful to see the image large without the gutter clutter.

This image was featured in my one man show as a 32" x 40" / 80 cm x 100 cm digital print. Prints available for purchase.

"Moguls"

Blasting the Moguls on Bell Mountain in Aspen Colorado

Great snow and compelling terrain make Ajax one of the premier ski mountains in the world. Throw in a a town that is both quirky and quaint and you have Aspen, Colorado. Whether you are hanging out at Little Annie's for an apr
és beer and a shot ($3) or dinning at the recently reconstituted Weinerstube, Aspen offers you a taste of it's historic past with all the glitz and glamor of today's posh resort.

In the photo above Bill Vipond blasts the moguls like a madman on the ridge of Bell Mountain on Ajax at Aspen. Bill is an amazing skier and a joy to photograph as he rarely misses a turn. In all the years I have been photographing him he has never hit me. About that, I am very happy. I just like the action and power this photo conveys.
