"Lumina" - Taos, New Mexico USA

"Lumina"

This is one of my most favorite photos. It is quite different from many of the photos I create in that it has much more subtle tones and textures. It also has a much more complex composition.
Travel Writing & Photography Workshop and Tour
Santa Fe, NM  May 29 – June 1, 201
I normally gravitate to cleaner more stark compositions with just a few elements. This image has many competing textures and elements. The chaos of this type of composition is often hard to manage. In my opinion for once I managed it well. The image has wonderful textural details in the shadows in the foreground. The riot of shadows created by the fence poles lead the eye around the photograph in an unrelenting manner.

The photo was created during a photo workshop I was teaching in Taos a few years back. It is very rare for me to make any decent photos while out in the field teaching a workshop. I usually do not have the time or concentration required to make good images. This is the exception. I had a rather small group and we were out early one morning near the Mabel Dodge House in Taos. The Lumina Gallery is next door and is one of my favorite places to visit in Taos. If I were rich I would live right there.

The group was complaining that they did not see much of interest to photograph. I went in search of some new subject matter for the group. I happened to take a walk to the back of the building and wedged myself, my tripod, and my camera into a very small space between the building and the fence. I could see the possibilities for the shot immediately. However, getting the camera into position on the tripod in such tight quarters proved difficult. The lighting of the scene also proved difficult to handle as well.

It is wonderful experience when the image you conceive in your head is able to be translated to the final print.

This image was featured in my shows as a 20" x 30" / 60 cm x 70 cm digital print. I have this print in my private collection.  Prints available for purchase

An old favorite, this photo is 35 years old and one of the first times I shot color film with much intention. I remember that it was spring in the Roaring Fork Valley and I had just moved down valley from Aspen. I was testing out new equipment I had purchased. I set up this photo late in the afternoon to take advantage of the low angle, warm light. I was very deliberate in how I controlled the depth of field and set up this composition.

While I have not made a career out of photographing flowers I seem to often photograph flowers as a part of my travel assignments. Even after all these years this remains one of my favorites.

"Circle Garden" Costa Rica

A porthole in the stairwell of the hotel frames a beautiful garden landscape in Costa Rica

 "Circle Garden" Costa Rica

A tropical garden photographed through the porthole window in the garden wall.

I like to get up early for a walk around the hotel property where I am staying. Occasionally you are rewarded with a beautiful scene.  Such was the case in Costa Rica when I was on a travel photography assignment from hell.  I was acting as the photographer portion of a writer/photographer team on 5-day tour that was a mixture of journalists and travel agents.  No disrespect towards travel agents intended but travel journalist and travel agents are a combustible mix.  The two groups are almost always at cross purposes. (PR pros take note) The travel agents need to tour properties, see hotel rooms, hear about vacancy rates and seasonal specials.  Travel writers may have modest interest in this information if the they write for trade publications.  Travel photographers have no interest in the information and in most cases no needs to endure it.

This particular tour was a combination fam tour and press trip.  In retrospect it felt like we were shot through Costa Rica on an arrow glancing around the country from one attraction to the next.  The truth was we lumbered around Costa Rica, 16 people stuffed into a 15 passenger van.  We bumped and thumped on rough roads into the mountains to visit places like Monteverde and Poás Volcano, changing hotels every night.

As I mentioned before I like to get up early and walk around the property and that was a good thing because had I not I wouldn't have had any photographs of the hotels we stayed at during this Costa Rican road rally.  We often arrived at our next destination after dark and too often were back in the van not long after first light.

If my memory serves me well this photo was actually made en route from my room back to the van to start another day on the road.  I probably kept the travel agents waiting for me in the van but to me that seemed justified for all the times I had to endure one more hotel room tour.

"Red Balloon White Star" Snowmass, Colorado

"Red Balloon White Star" Snowmass, Colorado

A timeless classic.

A graphic image of a hot air balloon as it drifts straight overhead at the Snowmass, Colorado balloon festival. An often published image that has great visual impact.

This photo was created in 1979 and first published as a two-page spread in GuestLife Magazine. I was just beginning my commercial career in Aspen. The two-page spread was coupe for me at the time. It had a nice paycheck attached to it but the gutter fold of the magazine destroyed the dynamic nature of the image. It was a natural choice for my one man show in Denver given its boldness and color. It was wonderful to see the image large without the gutter clutter.

This image was featured in my one man show as a 32" x 40" / 80 cm x 100 cm digital print. Prints available for purchase.

"Hibiscus" Tortola - British Virgin Islands

Hibiscus Crackle - British Virgin Islands copyright Jerome Shaw 1994 / www.JeromeShaw.com
Hibiscus photograph in Tortola, British Virgin Islands by Jerome Shaw

"Hibiscus"

The delicate blossom of the Hibiscus contrasts against the bright yellow background of the wall of my hotel. This image is all about the quality of light. With this light I could have made a very good photo of an empty beer can. Fortunately I had this sensuous tropical subject in Tortola in the British Virgin Islands.

I added a texture screen in Photoshop to this version of the image.  The screen enhances the delicate ribs in the blossom but subdues the vibrancy of the yellow background.  You can see the unadulterated version of the photo in my Art Print Composite.

"Chairs" Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada

Chairs - Nova Scotia, Canada - copyright Jerome Shaw 1996/ www.jeromeshaw.com

"Chairs"

A row of Adirondack chairs near the town Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada, creates an intensely colorful composition.  I shot several versions of this image but felt the compactness of this images which is exacerbated by the use of a telephoto lens made the best image.  This image is not color enhanced in the digital sense though it was created with 35mm high saturation color transparency film. I have considered retouching the image slightly to remove grass blades that rise against the yellow leg of the front chair --- so far I have resisted.

This image was featured in my exhibit as a 40" x 60" / 100cm x 150cm digital print. The 40"x60" print from the show is now in a private collection. Prints available for purchase.

"Four Crosses" - Taos Pueblo Taos, New Mexico, USA

Four Crosses- Taos Pueblo Taos, New Mexico USA
Four Crosses - Taos Pueblo Taos, New Mexico USA
The warm colors or the adobe and the stark white of the crosses bring a vibrancy to this image of the American Southwest. I enjoy the simple composition of this photograph.
Taos is one of my favorite travel destinations especially because it is just a few hours from my home in Denver. Yet, it is a world a way. It is full of colors, markets, galleries, fine restaurants, great taco stands, and last but not least a remarkable brew pub named Eske's. Have an India Pale Ale or an ESB (here it stands for Eske's Special Bitter) and tell them Jerome says "hi and I'll be back soon".

If you are looking for weekend get away to hone your travel photography skills join me for one of my workshops in Taos.  I have them in May and October each year.  We are planning the next one for May 2014.  For more information contact me  at TravelPhotoTours on Facebook
