Sadie belly dances at Lotus Nightclub in Denver’s Union Station.

Sadie and Kaya perform at many of the area clubs and during fashion shows and other events. In this case I was there to cover the fashion show for a local magazine and found out my friend Sadie was performing prior to the fashion show. It was a great chance to make some high intensity images. Photographing in club conditions is always filled with obstacles but freezing Sadie’s many motions is a special challenge.

I have photographed Sadie in the studio on several occasions both in her many costumes and in less.  A Break from Travel - Sadie Glance and Shadow Nude are two of my favorites.

The photo was taken with a Nikon D100 digital camera using a 80-200 mm f 2.8 Nikkor lens. The ISO setting was 800 with an approximate exposure of f 5.6 @ 1/500th second.

The soft, swaying grass glows as the sun filters through it in a field near the Roadhouse in Kantishna, Alaska outside Denali National Park.

The late evening light filters through foxtail grass in Kantishna, Alaska near Denali National Park. I was in Alaska working of a segment for the television series Sir Edmund Hilary's World of Adventure. for the Discovery Channel.   During some down time out in the field I found this patch of grass and began to photograph. I was drawn but the textures and the many soft shades of green that existed in this small patch of grass. The backlighting of the sun added another visual element to image.

I chose to display 3 separate vertical images as a horizontal triptych.

This image was featured in my one man show in Denver as 3 -24" x 36" / 60 cm x 90 cm digital prints and now graces the wall of my own home.  Prints available for purchase in a variety of sizes.

"Maisa's Lips" Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

A sensual black and white photo created while I was in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

"Maisa's Lips"

Though not technically a travel photo, this images was created while I was in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil covering a conference on sustainable tourism. It was an instant favorite of mine, nearly jumping off the contact sheet after I developed the film.

A simple subject, simple lighting, a simple composition create a sensual image. While "Shadow Nude" employed a multiple lights in a complex arrangement this photo uses the simplest of lighting, window light, to accent the softness of the feminine form. Maisa is a favorite model of mine and I created many images with her in B&W and color over the month plus I was living in Rio.

Photographed in my apartment on Barrata Ribeirro in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro Brazil using a Nikon F100 and B&W film.

This image was featured in my one man shows as a 40" x 60" / 100cm x 150cm digital print and is now in a private collection. It is very dramatic at this large size, which accentuates the soft textural qualities of image. Prints available for purchase.

"Chairs" Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada

"Chairs"

A row of Adirondack chairs near the town Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada, creates an intensely colorful composition.  I shot several versions of this image but felt the compactness of this images which is exacerbated by the use of a telephoto lens made the best image.  This image is not color enhanced in the digital sense though it was created with 35mm high saturation color transparency film. I have considered retouching the image slightly to remove grass blades that rise against the yellow leg of the front chair --- so far I have resisted.

This image was featured in my exhibit as a 40" x 60" / 100cm x 150cm digital print. The 40"x60" print from the show is now in a private collection. Prints available for purchase.

"Shadow Nude"

One in a series of nudes from a B&W film session with Sadie as the model. This is a single exposure, camera original image. All the multiple impressions and shadows were created by a complex arrangement of lights, opaque, translucent, and transparent materials.
