Belly Dancer Sadie Sizzles while performing at a Denver NIghtclub

Sadie Sizzles”

Sadie belly dances at Lotus Nightclub in Denver’s Union Station.

Sadie and Kaya perform at many of the area clubs and during fashion shows and other events. In this case I was there to cover the fashion show for a local magazine and found out my friend Sadie was performing prior to the fashion show. It was a great chance to make some high intensity images. Photographing in club conditions is always filled with obstacles but freezing Sadie’s many motions is a special challenge.
Travel Writing & Photography Workshop and Tour
Santa Fe, NM  May 29 – June 1, 2014
I have photographed Sadie in the studio on several occasions both in her many costumes and in less.  A Break from Travel - Sadie Glance and Shadow Nude are two of my favorites.

Sadie and Kaya put on a great show... when you are in Denver make certain to catch their act.. http://www.kayaandsadie.com/

The photo was taken with a Nikon D100 digital camera using a 80-200 mm f 2.8 Nikkor lens. The ISO setting was 800 with an approximate exposure of f 5.6 @ 1/500th second.

Portrait of a young woman - San Angel Market, Mexico City

Portrait of a young woman - San Angel Market, Mexico City copyright Jerome Shaw 2007 / www.JeromeShaw.com
A young woman mans a fruit stand in the market of San Angel. At one time it was a small town outside
of Mexico City, San Angel has now been absorbed by the staggering sprawl of the capital city Mexico.

Portrait of a young woman - San Angel Market, Mexico City

The market in San Angel, though indoors, has a good quality of light for photography and an excellent variety goods for purchase. It has everything from windows of fish packed in ice to hanging rows of freshly butchered chickens. There dozens of kinds fruit and vegetables.  There are peanuts, piñatas and pumpkins, fabric and flowers, shrimp and spices, and coconuts, crabs and cactus inside the two block market. There are many places to grab a bite to eat.  It is a lively place to spend time and a great place to make photographs.

I had to coax a smile out of this young woman at the San Angel market.  I mimed that I wanted to take a photo of her but at first she did not respond.  I looked into the camera to set up my shot and expected her expression to indicate whether I had her permission, but she was deadpan. I took one shot of her with a flat, stolid expression. I peeked around the camera and smiled at her. She smiled back and after one more exposure I knew I had my shot.

I had lined up the composition to include the stack of oranges at the front of the stand to contrast with a background of bright yellow bananas. Light from an exterior doorway was coming from behind me.  I was shooting with a 180mm f 2.8 lens so I knew the minimal depth of field would isolate my subject. All I needed was a smile, a moment, to create a photograph.

Do you like to photograph people or would you rather photograph subjects that don't talk back?  How do you handle photographing people in public environments?  Do you ask before you shoot or beg forgiveness if the subject objects? Share you methods in the comments below.

Inca Princess - Cusco, Peru

"Inca Princess" Cusco, Peru

The Inti Raymi Celebration at Sacsayhuaman in Cusco, Peru

As the Winter solstice comes to the southern hemisphere the people in Cusco recreate the grand Incan festival of Inti Raymi. The Incas worshipped the return of the sun and the beginning of the lengthening of daylight. This young woman is one of many that make a ceremonial offering to the gods to bring back the sun.

"Happy Guy" - Wedding Guest in Urubamaba, Peru

Happy Guy Wedding Guest - Urubamba Peru - Copyright Jerome Shaw 1984 / www.JeromeShaw.com
A very happy guy enjoys the third day of  3-day wedding celebration along the Urubamba River in Peru

 "Happy Guy, Urubama Peru"

I was the fortunate recipient of an invitation to a wedding in Peru while working as part of film crew at the time. We were involved in shooting film of river rafting on the Urubamba River for a movie for Mountain Travel/Soebek Tours about rafting & trekking in Peru.

We observed groups of people on a foot trail on the other side of the river. Dozens of people walked single file -- many carrying chairs, and baskets. One even had a table balanced on his head. However, by far the most interesting were those carrying musical instruments -- like the person who carried a large stringed instrument resembling a stand-up bass.  Some were dressed in colorful celebration clothes others were clad in their everyday attire. All of them had bounce in their steps and were visibly jovial. It was obvious they were headed to a party!

We saw this as an opportunity to get some footage of life in Peru for the film, so we abandoned our previous mission of shooting whitewater rafters on the Urubamba and attempted to get ahead of the line of people headed to a destination unknown to us.

We found a road to cross the river and attempted to get into position to photograph the serpentine group of revelers coming towards us.  In the effort to get access to a photogenic vantage we were going to have to cross what appeared to be private property.  Our guide and translator made contact with people in the yard of a house near the river.  He was able to determine that serendipity was indeed on our team today. The winding troupe of people were fortuitously headed to this home for a wedding celebration.

We were given permission to walk down the trail to get our shots and invited to stay for the wedding celebration. What an honor to be asked to sit, eat, stand, and dance in addition to filming and photographing! Each table was given it's own 'gringo." When it came time to dance, we were asked to participate by donning a ceremonial cape and cap and dance with the bride.

This wedding was one of the highlights of my time in Peru.

The man pictured in this photo was one of the guests at a wedding celebration. I loved the honesty of his smile and his face -- but for the life of me cannot remember why he was so happy.

"Proud Smile" Jardim Redentor, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Proud Smile - Jardim Redentor - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - copyright Jerome Shaw 2005 / www.jeromeshaw.com
"To me, photography is the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event."~Henri Cartier-Bresson

"Proud Smile"

I was out one day in Jardim Redentor walking along the main street. I noticed a woman in a beauty parlor.  She noticed me noticing her and smiled shyly. I asked Maisa to speak to her and ask her if I could take her photo. She was shy and reluctant at first. She and the other women in the shop had a good laugh and she wondered "why did I want to take her photo?" I told her she was a very beautiful woman, her hair looked so good, and she had such a nice face. She relented.

She came out into the street where the light was better.  I took three photos.. In the first she was very grim. In the second I managed to make her smile but she over smiled with forced nervousness in her eyes. However just fractions of a second after the forced smile the third frame was exposed. Her smile had softened slightly and her eyes had more warmth. A small and subtle difference but very noticeable.

I am sorry that I did not note her name. Though as we walked away Maisa told me that by asking for her photo I had made her day. She was extremely proud that I had asked to make her photo, Maisa said she will likely be smiling about this moment for weeks.

I was glad to give her this moment for she gave me a very nice moment too. I felt a warmth as we continued walking down the street. And, I revisit this warm feeling each time I see this photo.

"Boys of an Eternal Summer" - Jardim Redentor, Rio de Janeiro , Brazil

These boys interrupted their football game to pose for me through a hole in the playground fence.

"Boys of an Eternal Summer" Jardim Redentor, Rio de Janeiro , Brazil

Four boys take a break from their football game to pose for photo through a hole in the playground fence.

I took many walks around the streets of Jardim Redentor during my three visits to this area. I enjoyed seeing the vibrancy of the people as they lived out their lives. I am from a very small town in Southwestern Nebraska and at times Jardim Redentor reminded me of my tiny home town, Hayes Center. Well .... except for all the people, as there were only about 250 residents in Hayes Center when I last visited. I know I saw more people on the streets in Jardim Redentor within the first few blocks of any of my walks. Yet, the feeling of small town community existed on the streets of Jardim Redentor.

The photo was taken with a Olympus D590 digital camera on automatic exposure and the lens on wide angle.

"Playing in the Surf" Copacabana Beach, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Maisa Playing in the Surf on Copacabana Beach Rio de Janeiro Brazil -copyright Jerome Shaw 2005 / www.jeromeshaw.com

"Playing in the Surf"

Maisa tries to keep her dress dry as she plays in the surf along the beach at Copacabana. I like this image for it's moment and the unguarded expression that it captures. The monochrome color scheme helps focus attention on the subject and the group of small figures on the right help balance the composition.

The photo was taken with a Olympus D590 digital camera on automatic exposure. The image is overexposed creating high key lighting in the overcast conditions.

"A Toothy Grin"

Robert flashes a toothy grin when I turn the camera on him on Rua Coelho Branco, Jardim Redentor. Robert is the brother of sisters Jennifer and Beatriz from the photo "You want a photo of ME?" published previously here on Travel Boldly.

Robert was plenty mad at me when he found out that I had brought his sisters a copy of the photo I had taken of them but had not brought one of him. Unfortunately, Robert's photo was shot earlier on a film camera and was not available until I returned to Colorado. I owe Robert a photo and will mail it soon. I look forward to seeing him again on my next trip to Brazil.

"Maisa in the Mirror" B&W photograph from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

"Maisa in the Mirror"

Sometimes photos just appear without any direction and you just have to be savvy enough to see them. This photo appeared and disappeared in seconds. I managed two frames before Maisa noticed me taking pictures and the opportunity evaporated. The moment of a photograph is transient and moments in life are ephemeral, it is with photography that we can arrest the relentless assault of time. The image embodies a sensibility of an earlier era though it was taken in 2005.

"Maisa's Lips" Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

A sensual black and white photo created while I was in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

"Maisa's Lips"

Though not technically a travel photo, this images was created while I was in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil covering a conference on sustainable tourism. It was an instant favorite of mine, nearly jumping off the contact sheet after I developed the film.

A simple subject, simple lighting, a simple composition create a sensual image. While "Shadow Nude" employed a multiple lights in a complex arrangement this photo uses the simplest of lighting, window light, to accent the softness of the feminine form. Maisa is a favorite model of mine and I created many images with her in B&W and color over the month plus I was living in Rio.

Photographed in my apartment on Barrata Ribeirro in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro Brazil using a Nikon F100 and B&W film.

Cropped detail of "Maisa's Lips"
This image was featured in my one man shows as a 40" x 60" / 100cm x 150cm digital print and is now in a private collection. It is very dramatic at this large size, which accentuates the soft textural qualities of image. Prints available for purchase.

"You Want a Photo of Me?" - a favorite photo from my travels in Brazil

entor, Rio "You Want a Photo of Me?" - 2 girls on the streets of Jardim Redde Janeiro, Brazil. photography copyright Jerome Shaw 2005 / www.JeromeShaw.com
"You want a photo of ME?" Sisters Jennifer (right) and Beatriz on Rua Coelho Branco, Jardim Redentor, Rio de Janeiro. The colors, the subject juxtaposition, and the contrasting expressions and body language of the two girls all seem to work in concert to give this photo a harmony.    Photograph by Jerome Shaw

"You want a photo of ME?"

Just this past Friday I had the pleasure to have a video and voice chat with Jennifer. I photographed Jennifer, her sister Beatriz and brother Robert while I was in Brazil in November 2005.

Jennifer lives just down the street from my good friend Maisa and was over at Maisa's house in Jardim Redentor this past Friday evening. Maisa helped interpret for us and showed Jennifer many of the photos that I made while I was in Jardim Redentor and Rio de Janeiro. It was great fun to hear her laugh and see her smile. I even tried to patch together a few phrases from my Portuguese lesson book. Thank goodness for Maisa's language skills, because I have none.

Over all the miles and even depicted in pixels and digital sound Jennifer's vibrancy glows. I hope with all my heart that life's harsher realities never steal the exuberance and enthusiasm from this lovely young girl.

I am now more sure than ever that I will return to Brazil. I will visit Jennifer, Beatriz, and their little brother Robert. Jennifer tells me she is quite an amazing cook and will certainly fatten me up a bit. I can't wait to taste her cooking !

Sisters Jennifer (right) and Beatriz on Rua Coelho Branco, Jardim Redentor

I had seen these girls earlier with their little brother and photographed them with my film camera. One a second walk around town, with a small digital camera I had borrowed from my friend Maisa, I saw the girls again. I asked to make another photo. Jennifer was quite flattered and stepped forward, bubbling and giggling, for the picture. Beatriz was a bit more reserved. Jennifer put her hand up as if to say "You want a photo of ME?" I, at first waited for her to lower her hand, then realized that this was the essence of the photo and of her personality.

This is one of my favorite people photos from the trip. The colors, the subject juxtaposition, and the contrasting expressions and body language of the two girls all seem to work in concert to give this photo a harmony.

When I went back to Rio, I made two prints of this photo. On my next visit to Jardim Redentor, Maisa and I found the girls and gave them each photos with a small inscription in English on the back. Maisa told the girls that they should ask their English teacher to help them read it. As we walked away from them they ran down the street waving the photos and calling to their friends to come see, come see.

It is rare to spend only a couple of dollars and give so much pleasure. And, certainly I received just as much joy as did Jennifer and Beatriz. I'll look forward to seeing them again on my next visit to Brazil.
The photo was taken with a Olympus D590 digital camera on automatic exposure with widest angle lens setting available.
